Raanjhana -movie review!

A little banarasi pandit kid madly in love with a muslim girl, whole lot of slapping, colorful holi ,euphoric dancing and then, they grow up. Recurring trailers tell you that and that is what I like about Raanjhana, the fact that this bit takes only a quarter of the reel, the rest remains yet to be discovered.

Cinematography juggles aesthetics and realism effortlessly. The screenplay too remains engaging ,the second half comes off as a little heavier as well as a wee bit confusing as to the story but before your brows begin to crease, things culminate to a closure, which is only appropriate. The director Anand Rai of Tanu weds Manu fame handles this drama pretty nicely in the magical and real small town setting.

In the acting department, Dhanush(kundan) is very slim, maybe even slimmer than Sonam, that is what you actually get from his opening shots, but once past that, he delivers a very convincing and zealous performance, he totally looks his character. Sonam Kapoor (zoya) does a good job too, although her character remains grey. The supporting actors are brilliant with Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub (Murari), Kundan’s friend, who is full of quirky and funny dialogues, bringing in the sweet humor to this romantic drama, another gem Swara Bhaskar(bindiya) fantastically portrays the character's unrequited love for Kundan. Abhay Deol (Akram) in his brief role is as usual perfect and handsome.

Music by AR Rahman fits like a glove and is flavorsome. Raanjhana and Tum tak are soulful whilst Aise na dekho and tu mun shudi very different in appeal.

Watch this one for-

1. Awesome one liners 2.Different story with good acting  3.A.R Rahman’s music and
4. Dhanush’s waist size

Rating-3/5
