Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns review

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns is a story about royalty, power, love and conspiracy. This sequel to the 2011 movie is written, produced and directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia of Paan Singh Tomar fame. The very first glance and you can’t resist crediting the cinematographer Yogesh jani with the oh-so classy representation of the royals almost like the glossy merchandise ads in the magazines. This is enhanced even more by Jimmy Shergill and Soha-Ali-Khan who fit their royal characters perfectly.

A good part about the movie is the fact that despite being a series movie ,it starts with a new story accommodating new audience who walk comfortably with the story without feeling lost , having not watched the first instalment.

Saheb, Biwi aur Gangster Returns murdered...er minus Randeep Hooda is comparatively low on explicit sexuality, having said that Madhavi Devi’s (Mahie Gill) drunk and a little mad character fills that gap herself. Also compared to the first movie, SBGR brings out wired parallels with Jane Eyre, given the haughty rich, mad first wife, subtle second and the gothic appeal which comes heavily through the big mansion, Madhavi Devi’s scary balcony murder plans and of course blaring “lag jaa gale” track.

Another distinct incorporation, compared to the sad and serious first movie, is the humorous comedy which is brought with politician Tiwari and Inderjit Singh (Irfann Khan). The script although powerful drags a little in the first half where the second half scores big on suspense and excitement, also some characters like those of Soha-ali-Khan and Irfaan Khan seems a little incomplete.

The acting department delivers awesome performances. Irfann Khan portrays Inderjit Singh with effortless nonchalance looking very natural, Jimmy Shergill commands strong screen presence and very good performance, Mahie Gill is another wonder though her versatility is yet to be tested, Soha-ali Khan is good too along with Pravesh Rana and Raj Babbar.

Jugni without any doubt triumphs as the best number, other songs are average and the background score pretty decent. Editing and screenplay lag a little with minor flow discrepancy.

Watch this movie, if you are an Anurag Kashyap fan, love betrayals, politics and complex drama.

rating-2.5/5
