Reminiscent of the recent Anna Hazare movement last year, Prakash
Jha’s fictional movement against corruption tries to bask in maximum heat from
the real life hot and cold affair. This isn't much different an inspiration
from his earlier venture Aarakshan. Regardless of the inspiration or maybe because
of it, the plot line of Satyagraha is nothing but ordinary leaning more towards
unnatural. Though made with good intentions(no doubt) ,the movie from the first
gear looks like a social-drama-stage-play with characters removed from reality mouthing
heavy, motto-esque ‘dialogues’.
Satyagraha in terms of screenplay fails to maintain pace and
derails at many junctures with some scenes extremely slow and others in a hurry
almost illogical. The first half, one can’t help thinking when does the fast-unto-death
happens and by the time it is shown in the second half, the glance at the wrist
watch is more frequent.
The scenes sadly lack true connection and the only bypass
through these cliches is the strong backup from the acting powerhouse! Ajay Devgn
is bold, expressive and highly intense, Amitabh Bachachan is absolutely
flawless! He dons every emotion effortlessly. Kareena Kapoor’s character is pretty
good and she does a good job as well but seems unneeded in certain scenes. Arjun
Rampal’s character is vague and he does a descent job. Manoj Bajpai as the antagonist
is fantastic and he entertains the audience whenever he is on screen. Amrita
Rao has a minor role and she gives an average performance.
The music, does not impress much
and is highly satisfactory.
Watch it for-
1. Acting and only that.
