Unless you live under a rock, you already are aware about
Deepika Padukone’s reaction to the (in the actor’s sarcastic words) ‘leading
daily’ carrying pictures of her cleavage from top angle with the caption ‘OMG:
Deepika Padukone’s cleavage show’. With her clearly upbraiding the Times of India
newspaper on twitter and an out and out support from the film fraternity, the
actor has highlighted the unethical practices of the paparazzi.

But what followed in quick succession were reactions from
Times of India and two opinion posts from Shobhaa De (on theNdtv website) and
Pooja Bedi (on the Times of India website). I am not wasting my time commenting
on the newspaper’s blatantly stupid and condemn-able reply. It is as disgusting as Perez Hilton putting up nude photos of JLaw and THEN apologizing. However the
arguments posted by the two ladies need to be analyzed.

Both the writers are without doubt all for an egalitarian society
and to support their equal-treatment argument they both cite top male actors
from the industry. While SRK and Aamir
Khan and their 6 pack abs (and groin in Aamir’s case) are used by Shobha de
.Pooja Bedi adds Hrithik to the list. The writers contend that since these male ‘sculpted’
bodies are ‘drooled over’ and marveled at ,why according to an equal society is
Deepika going gung-ho.
Shobhaa De questions the actors’ right to get offended when
they 'wear clothes that reveal more than they want to flash’.Pooja
Bedi presents and argument on similar lines ,’For a celebrity, going out in
front of the cameras is a responsibility to flaunt only what they want noticed.’
As per their logic, then are we supposed to believe that Miss Pooja Bedi accepts it the right of the photographer to shoot a lady from the bottom-up angle when she
is wearing a skirk since she says that, ‘everyone is entitled to their point of
view, even if it’s top angle!’
It just appalls me how both the writers have forgotten that
what they have used as arguments are pictures taken by permission. SRK or any
other actor has willingly agreed for the shoot. There is no violation of their
right to their bodies and this extends to the females too. They have agreed for
the Vogue shoot or any other movies be it Cocktail or Ramleela. They are not conspicuously
captured and splashed across with tantalizing captions.Without permission this
amounts to harassment!

Perhaps they were offset by this photo :P
Shobhaa De is missing the point since cleavage is not the
issue (as the actor has said) ,but it is the unethical photography and the accompanying
objectifying caption .
And to answer her questions-
Was Toi crossing the line in this case? Yes. Has Deepika
over reacted ?Hella no!
