Hope for Indian Television?

What comes to your mind when i say Kapoor .Okay what comes to your mind when i say Kapoor and TV? Ah yes. That one name which has made our television create an entirely new era.I say the tv writers today are excellent in creating fantasy , truly the plot moves at a speed not natural to reality, the characters keep wearing the same outfit albeit different colors forever. The protagonists are so self less that they create the new meaning for the word ridiculous.

As another serial gets ready for the marriage of another couple and as a tv channel waits for the maha episodes of Patniyon ka sangharsh!. I switched on my computer to watch a sitcom. Foreign is good and there are a ton of shows we enjoy watching, only i wish our Indian channels could air some good shows too. Thanks to the youtube culture , online players like TVF  have come up with new online series based on youngsters.
Like Pitchers from TVF ,a story about four guys working in the IT industry with a dream to start up their own company, is a refreshing change from the husband wife, saas bahu , household drama .A great departure from marriage and homely kartavyas, where no one is plotting god forsaken evil plans and not one is stupid to not sense evil! These shows are relatable , like the the scene from where Naveen has a motivational drink with his mentor or the scene where his boss convinces him not to quit are scenes we could relate to as happening in real lives.
Even with Permanent Roomates , TVF had a new story of discussing about a long distance relationship and its problems in a cheerfully light manner.

With our telly serials ,we have seen them start with a good concept or  get 'inspired' by concepts from abroad and we have seen them fail.Well with the format of endless shows telecasted on five, even six days a week is bound to fail.Remember the launch time of the Zindagi channel? Why did people go all crazy even when the shows weren't totally outside the usual family drama? well apart from the sarhad paar romanticism it was because of the short format, a finite duration.

Watching these shows online , made me wish a reform on television. I mean we all have made numerous jokes on the tv serials by now ,so why don't the networks do anything about it.Why are we still forced to be audience to shows that are completely nonsensical?
Given the demographic dividend, i don't think there don't think there is a dearth of audience. There is a huge population apart from housewives who need entertainment! Many say the shows don't work , because they don't get enough trps, well i disagree no one can counter good promotion and
solid content.Agreed ,the budget crunch might be one of the numerous hurdles .New ventures would probably struggle in breaking the hegemony and thus for starters the veterans on television should promote new formats, the big tv production houses should invest in new concepts and make interesting story lines.

Imagine the coming back of a time , when we can watch tv for good shows without having to wait for them to download.
We had it before remember Just Mohabbat or Hip Hip Hurray or Dekh Bhai Dekh!
I wish India makes better use of its actors, writers, other production artists ans sanity.
I wish with the push from TVF , a new wave would come so that we could claim our tv! Maybe Ekta Kapoor can start this?

*i dont own any of the images*

  1. Yeah you're right anjali...... I think Television should be dumped in trash forever..... as indian channels and there awful serials with overacting like "bade door se aye h"(sab tv) are horrible to watch for entertainment. .... The Internet will be the new television. ...... like online movies. ....... also the web series on youtube..... also direct news on several website without overacting news readers and their nonsense presentation of news with lot of advertisement that too in loop. ....

    1. Yes, there is a lot of regressive and monotonous shows on tv, but i think if we use the resources in the right manner, even we can come up with great entertainment.Wishing that revolution comes soon :)
