Ishqiya fared well at the box office with positive reviews
but could the sequel to the adventures of small time criminals invite a similar
response? Dedh Ishqiya like many other
sequels in India is not a continuation of the first movie but the story of the same
characters Ifthekar and Babban encountering different cunning females.
Countryside-small towns are the forte of Vishal Bharadwaj and
his teaming with director Abhishek produced authentic picturisation. The cinematography
was every bit honest, raw and carried a certain earthen flavour. The story
though was carefully unfolded as to guard the twists, lacked luster and seemed
simple. Some scenes including Madhuri’s backstory seemed a tad bit distanced
from the major plot. Barring this the story incorporates subtle humour which
hits bull’s eye with the audience repeatedly.
The acting brigade was spot on, with the great cast
delivering great performances. Naseeruddin Shah as Ifthekhar is extremely real
and believable. Arshad Warsi as Babban is equally impressive .Madhuri Dixit
gives a classy portrayal as Begum Para and Huma Quereshi lives up to her
character of Munniya. The chemistry between the two pair of characters is pretty
good. But the person who brings laughter each time the camera is on him is the
antagonist funny man Vijay Raaz. He along with other supporting characters like
Manoj Pahwa as a nawab is wonderful.
The background score and the songs like ‘hamari atariya’ and
‘dil ka mijaaz ishquia’ are pretty descent but i hardly believe if they’d gain
much popularity as ‘dil to bachcha hai ji’ did.
