Shaandaar -movie review!

Source-Youtube.com

When a blockbuster director who’s given great stories in the past pairs up with bankable stars of Bollywood, he gives you a box office hit or does he?
Shaandaar is a destination wedding movie revolving around a fun loving weird girl adopted by a wealthy family, her sister-the bride, the family’s motives and the rich marriage extravaganza organized by a dashing and good natured wedding planner.

It is a disappointment that Vikas Bahl who’s given story ideas like Queen and Chillar party fails to make an impact with Shaandaar. The excitement of the trailers quickly fizzles out. And the reason is the story or the lack of it. The issues the movie deals with like the wealthy marriage+business deals or the stereotypical rich and dumb characters  etc are nothing new and already seen in various other ventures .The screenplay too is on the weaker side with the first half itself becoming a tad boring and the second half not really looking up. As an audience I was pretty much aware of the ending. Only the cinematography is beautiful and the costume department on point with both the actors looking stunning in the movie.
Acting wise, as per the script, the actors have done a good job. Shahid looks the part, is wonderful and has a good presence on screen. Alia Bhatt looks cute and does a good job portraying the fun, rebellious character. But the romance should've been more between the lead actors.Pankaj Kapur is absolutely smashing in the role of a doting and protective father.Sanah Kapur as a debutante does a sweet job as well.

The music department helmed by Amit Trivedi has done a decent job with Shaam Shaandaar and Gulaabo being the highlight numbers. Other songs are neither interesting nor necessary. In fact the sangeet song while trying to be witty becomes pretty ordinary.

The movie has its moments with some funny sequences and some led by the father-son duo where you will LOL but even despite that, at several times, one feels that the comic situations are too forced and detached to match with the plot.
To sum up, one can say Shaandaar is a movie we had seen before its release.  It tries to be Sonam’s Khoobsurat  (which I don’t know why anyone would want to be) but fails like it in creating a fairy tale movie .It tries to be Dil Dhadakne Do but fails to match the kind of depth of the characters. It tries to be Hasee to Phasee but fails to get the weirdness quite right.
