Dil Dhadakne Do -Movie Review!

Trailers told us that this was gonna be a movie about a dysfunctional family on a cruise trying to solve problems about life, and to be honest , I wasn’t really excited to watch this one , given Zoya Akhtar’s love for rich people and my lack of interest for rich people problems.

Dil Dhadakne Do is a story of a family on cruise to celebrate the marriage anniversary of the Mehra couple. This is a family which pretends to be perfect for the world but in reality doesn’t even talk to each other. The boys are expected to lead business and the girls get married and take care of home. As the story moves forward we witness the harsh truths about marriage as a transaction for rich families and the lives people choose to lead to conform to the societal expectations.

In my opinion, the story was very much predictable and that is perhaps why the one seventy minutes especially in the second half seem like a draaaag! The story has its highs and lows and those highs are what make it a decent watch. The cinematography is beautiful with the blue ocean following in each frame. Zoya Akhtar must be congratulated for the direction ,for working with hyper active set of actors like Anil Kapoor ,Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra could have easily made the movie a madhouse , but thanks to Zoya , the actors maintain their space and the excess energy is managed comfortably.

The acting department worked appropriately to their sketches .With the plate full of known faces, we see good acting from the whole cast. Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah were pretty amazing.Ranveer Singh acts his usual self and hasa  good presence. Priyanka Chopra is great at points but at other places is highly average.Farhan Akhtar and Anushka in their special appearances are good.The only okay number being Pehli Baar.

Dil Dhadakne Do was not as bad as I expected it to be. All in all, a decent watch.

PK movie review!

PK. Aamir. Hirani. Confuzia-gaye-kya? These three magical words were enough to attract the audience to the theatres but Aamir’s ‘almost’ nude stunt was not to be missed :P . The cardinal combination of the actor-director which broke the theatres across the nation with 3 idiots was only bound to create such curiosity.

Remember thinking out of the box? For our aam-aadmi troubles, Hirani and writer Abhijat brought the other worldly perspective quite literally. The movie features Jagat Janini aka ‘Jaggu’(Anushka Sharma) a journalist covering the interesting story of this hell of a man ‘PK’ (Aamir Khan) ,who innocently questions our seemingly normal traditions.

The movie stands tall with incredible performance by mister perfectionist. Aamir is on spot and extremely cute with his Bhojpuri accent. Anushka Sharma portrays her character wonderfully and  Sanjay Dutt , Boman Irani , Saurabh Shukla and Sushant Singh as supporting characters are as usual good too.

BUT, Pk fails too surpass the aura that Munna Bhai or 3 idiots created. The story though deals with the main issue in a comprehensive yet funny manner, what brings the awesome first half down a notch is the ‘filmy’ quotient especially the climax sequence where the sentimentality makes you utter a “meh” inside.

The soundtrack on the whole is decent which ‘Chaar kadam’ and ‘Tharki chokro’ standing out.

Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola Review

“Khatra hai!” –don’t worry I’m not warning you against anything this is just, alike barfi, a delightful, creative and funny pre-intro to Vishal Bhardwaj’s quirky titled “Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola “. This maiden politic satire from the director cum composer takes up farmer’s  land issue and the corruption thereof involving a young do –gooder Matru (Imran Khan) , a filthy rich and ardent drinker  Harry Mandola (Pankaj Kapoor) ,his daughter engaged to be married  Bijli (Anushka Sharma) and cunning politician Chaudari Devi (Shabana azmi).

Where Vishal Bhardwaj aces the comedy card with brilliant drunk humour from the power packed Pankaj Kapoor appropriately complimented by Imran Khan, the first half represents a weak amalgamation of the comic element and the story line .Unlike other comedy drama movies like Hera Pheri ,Housefull 2,Rawdy Rathore where the major plot of whatever nature re-enforces itself after comic gags, in this movie the plot specially in the first half seems over shadowed by character development . The second half shows much more actions to move the plot which culminates into a low key climax but seems a bit boring with its unnecessary length.

The casting looks good and this results in awesome performance delivery, where Pankaj Kapoor is truly amazing with his perfect Haryanvi dialect and stupendous acting, Imran Khan breaking out from his chocolate boy image fairs well in his handsome portrayal of Matru , Anushka’s character though under developed remains monotonous vis a vis her characters in other movies , she does fine .Shabana Azmi is another gem with her perfect portrayal of the shrewd character. Arya Babbar does well for his role.

Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola adds to the list of movies bearing sheer realistic cinematography by the director. It also visually conforms to the Vishal Bhardwaj movies with its lighting and colour reminding one of Omkara and Saat koof Maaf. 

The music fits like a glove to the movie and boasts some local flavoured numbers like the title track, sha ra ra, oye boy Charlie and khamakha/

Watch this one for gulabo (the pink cow), a haryanvi Imran Khan and a drunk Pankaj Kapoor!
